THEORY

The Process is the brainchild of Paul Shirley.

Paul's a former professional athlete, playing basketball for 17 teams over the course of a decade-long career. This included three regular-season stops in the NBA, along with myriad jobs playing for teams in Europe, for minor league teams in the US, and everything in-between.

In the middle of his career, Paul wrote a book about his experiences, called Can I Keep My Jersey? When his career was done, he moved to Los Angeles to "be a writer," at which point he realized he didn't know what he was doing. He did, though, have a secret weapon -- what his basketball career had taught him about building systems so he could break into manageable bits the massive project of becoming a professional basketball player.

He applied this to his writing and was amazed by the results. It dawned on him then that it wasn't just writing that this applied to. It was everything people were doing in the realm of "knowledge work" -- all the cognitive labor that has replaced physical work in our culture.

So, he started The Process: a workspace designed to teach people what he learned throughout his basketball career.

At The Process, we help people:

1. Build systems (processes) so they can break massive projects into chunks.

2. Hold themselves accountable to the goals they set for themselves.

3. Meet other people like them.

Paul has written two books about work.
